Zawadi Nyong’o, the daughter of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, has revealed that she secretly married her wife in 2022, sharing the milestone publicly for the first time through an Instagram post.
Zawadi, a digital media strategist and wellness advocate, disclosed that the couple exchanged vows on August 8, 2022. She explained that the date held deep personal significance because it coincided with the annual Lion’s Gate Portal, a spiritual belief observed by some as a period of personal growth and new beginnings, as well as what would have been her late grandmother’s 88th birthday.
“We got married on 8/8/22. The Lion’s Gate Portal and my angel grandmother’s 88th birthday,” she wrote.
Alongside the message, Zawadi shared a graphic explaining the Lion’s Gate Portal and why the date was meaningful to her. While she has previously spoken openly about being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, this is the first time she has publicly confirmed that she has been married since 2022.
In October 2025, Zawadi introduced her wife, Rachel, and their daughter, Amaya, giving Kenyans their first public glimpse into her family. Since then, she has occasionally shared moments from their lives together on social media.
One of the family’s recent posts, showing Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o spending time with Zawadi, Rachel and their daughter, also generated widespread discussion online.
Her latest revelation has added a new chapter to her family’s story, confirming that she and Rachel had been married for more than two years before making their relationship public. Through her platform, Zawadi continues to share personal milestones while encouraging conversations about identity, family and acceptance.
