In the quiet village of Matambo, located in Morogoro, Tanzania, an elderly man—frail and worn—is asking for one last chance to reconnect with the family he walked away from over twenty years ago.
Issa Maulid left his wife and two children 26 years back, following what he calls a minor argument at home.
Looking back, he sees that moment as the biggest mistake he ever made. Without looking back, he left his family and headed to Dar es Salaam, never to come home or contact those he once lived with.
Now, battling tuberculosis and facing the harsh truth that his own time might be limited, Maulid shared in an emotional interview that his deepest hope is to return home, see his family again, and spend his final days with them.
He didn’t shy away from admitting that his wife, Fatuma Bin Saidi, was a good partner and that together they had raised their two children before he vanished.
Regret filled the years after his departure, but only illness and loneliness gave him the courage to contemplate returning. Maulid says these struggles forced him to look hard at his past choices.
Feeling time slip away, he hopes his family can find it in their hearts to forgive him, so he can die among his own and be laid to rest there.
Along with his story, he passed on a simple but earnest piece of advice to young men: respect your wives, stay true to your families, and don’t repeat the mistakes that cost him decades with those he loved. His heartfelt plea has stirred different reactions online.
Some feel that forgiveness could heal the wounds for everyone involved, while others believe the pain his wife and children have carried for 26 years is too deep to forget.
For now, Maulid waits, clinging to hope that his message will reach the family he once left behind.
