The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has admitted to a mistake in the printing of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results. They say a system error led to the omission of minus signs (-) for some student grades. This meant that some students’ grades were printed as, for example, a D instead of a D-.
KNEC says this affected 3,018 students across 1,059 exam centers nationwide. They say the online portal showed the correct results, but the printed records sent to schools had the errors.KNEC has since sent corrected printouts to the affected schools. The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, said the ministry has taken steps to prevent similar errors in the future. This includes setting up a technical team to review the examination process and make recommendations.
The recommendations include establishing a multi-agency ICT committee to oversee the exam process, upgrading KNEC’s IT infrastructure, and implementing regular system tests. KNEC has also been told to do more monitoring to quickly identify and fix any problems.Members of Parliament raised concerns about the trauma and confusion caused by the errors for the affected students. The government says it is committed to ensuring the examination system is robust and reliable going forward.
