Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has emphasized that Kenya cannot achieve sustainable development if the Judiciary remains corrupt, unclear, and ineffective. He stated that the Judiciary is a key pillar of good governance, peace, and economic progress, and that its performance directly affects the nation’s future.
Raila explained that a well-functioning justice system strengthens public trust in the rule of law and boosts investor confidence. He said that when courts deliver fair and timely decisions, both citizens and international partners are assured that their rights and investments are protected. However, if judicial officers accept bribes or deliver biased rulings, it undermines justice, fuels public frustration, and threatens national stability.
He warned that corruption in the Judiciary not only causes injustice but also emboldens the powerful to act with impunity. This, in turn, leads to a breakdown in the legal system, where ordinary people feel neglected and may resort to unlawful means to seek justice. According to Raila, such conditions scare away investors and slow economic growth.
The ODM leader also criticized the lack of transparency in judicial processes. He noted that when the public cannot understand how court decisions are made or suspects favoritism, they lose faith in the courts. This erosion of trust weakens national cohesion and opens the door to political and economic instability.
Additionally, Raila expressed concern about judicial incompetence. He pointed out that some judges lack the expertise to handle critical cases, leading to delayed judgments or poor decisions. This inefficiency affects major issues like land disputes, election petitions, and commercial litigation—all crucial to development.
Raila concluded that Kenya will not realize Vision 2030 or become a strong economy unless urgent reforms are made in the Judiciary. He called on the President, Parliament, and other leaders to support judicial reforms aimed at promoting professionalism, transparency, and accountability.
Without a clean and competent justice system, he warned, the fight against corruption and poverty will be lost, and Kenya’s dream of prosperity will remain out of reach.
