Charles Keter has reportedly declared support for the emerging opposition alliance associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka through the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
According to reports, Keter publicly backed DCP candidate Vincent Rotich ahead of the upcoming Emurua Dikirr parliamentary by-election scheduled for May 14. The former Cabinet Secretary is said to have campaigned for Rotich through a phone call, urging residents to support the opposition-backed candidate.
The by-election is attracting significant political attention as opposition leaders seek to test their influence against the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in a region traditionally viewed as politically competitive. Rotich is expected to face strong competition from candidates aligned with the ruling party and other political groups.
Political observers say Keter’s endorsement could strengthen the opposition’s efforts to expand its influence within the Rift Valley region due to his long experience in government and national politics. Keter previously served both as a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Secretary during the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Analysts note that endorsements from experienced political figures may play a key role in shaping alliances ahead of future political contests, particularly as opposition parties continue reorganizing after recent political realignments.
The development is being viewed by supporters of the opposition as a strategic gain that could help broaden support beyond traditional political strongholds. At the same time, the ruling party is expected to intensify campaigns in the constituency as both sides seek to demonstrate political strength ahead of the next election cycle.
The Emurua Dikirr contest continues to draw national interest, with many viewing it as an early indicator of shifting political dynamics within the Rift Valley and across Kenya’s opposition landscape.
