The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a 17-year-old boy linked to the desecration of the Kenyan national flag during a football match at Nyayo Stadium. The incident took place on Saturday, September 20, during a fixture between Mogadishu City Club and Kenya Police FC.
The suspect was captured in a viral video alongside another youth, both seen mishandling the flag in a manner that many Kenyans described as disrespectful. Their actions sparked widespread outrage across the country, with calls for immediate action against those involved.
According to the DCI, the teenager was tracked down and arrested on Thursday, September 25. Investigations revealed that the two youths deliberately used the flag during the game in a way that went against the dignity of the national symbol. The second suspect is still on the run, and security agencies have launched a manhunt to ensure he faces justice.
The incident has raised heated debate online and offline. Many Kenyans expressed disappointment over the act, insisting that the national flag is a symbol of unity and identity that must be treated with the highest level of respect. Others questioned the level of awareness among young people regarding the importance of national symbols, urging authorities to increase civic education.
Sports administrators also weighed in, noting that while passion for football is welcomed, it must never cross the line into actions that undermine national pride. The Football Kenya Federation has been urged to work closely with stadium officials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
