Ida Odinga brought a lovely touch of humor and warmth to the solemn gathering at her Opoda Farm home on Thursday, November 6, 2025. She had the crowd laughing as she shared some delightful insights from her days as a teacher.
As she welcomed a notable group of guests who came to pay their respects for her late husband, Raila Odinga, she made a charming revelation about her connections to two well-known governors from Kenya who were in attendance.
The moment unfolded when Mrs. Odinga acknowledged the dignitaries with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. With a twinkle in her eye, she paused and pointed out Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, letting a huge smile break through the serious atmosphere. “By the way, Governor Wavinya Ndeti was my student,” she announced, sparking a wave of cheerful applause and laughter from the mourners.
Seemingly enjoying the friendly exchange, Ida, who enjoyed a rewarding teaching career spanning over 20 years before venturing into business, playfully turned to the other educators present. “I know there are many teachers here. Who did you teach?” she asked, bringing even more smiles to the crowd.
With a satisfied nod, she continued, “At least I can say I’ve seen two of my students here,” before she shifted her attention to Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., confirming that he was the second governor who had once sat in her classroom.
This personal touch came as the former First Lady expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their steadfast support. She spoke warmly about the genuine friendships that brought her visitors to Bondo during this challenging time.
“Only those who truly loved Raila Odinga are the ones who come here… and for that, I am very grateful,” she said, beautifully tying her teaching legacy to the deep, meaningful connections being celebrated that day.
