Kenyan hair and makeup artist John Mokuna Mungai, popularly known as Jony the Hairdresser, has explained why he uses ladies’ washrooms in public spaces despite being male, sparking a debate among Kenyans on social media.

Jony made the revelation during an interview with media personality Kwambox on Thursday, October 22, 2026, where he was asked about his choice of public washrooms.

The cross-dresser said his feminine appearance, clothing and voice often make people perceive him as a woman, influencing his decision when using public facilities.

“The ladies. Because I speak for myself, I pass as a lady more than a guy,” Jony said during the interview.

He explained that he does not have much facial hair and his voice is not particularly deep, adding that his dressing also contributes to how people perceive him.

According to Jony, his experiences in public spaces have made him more cautious, especially when visiting entertainment venues.

The hairdresser revealed that he usually informs bouncers and club staff that he is male before entering establishments to avoid possible misunderstandings.

He said the precaution was important because he could find himself in situations where people might question his appearance or identity.

Jony also shared that people who present themselves differently should remain cautious when interacting with others in public spaces.

His remarks attracted attention online, with some Kenyans expressing concerns about privacy and safety in women’s washrooms, while others discussed the challenges faced by people whose appearance differs from conventional expectations.

Content creator Kelvin Kinuthia, who is also known for cross-dressing, subsequently confirmed that he uses ladies’ washrooms.

Kinuthia reacted to the discussion on Friday, October 23, saying the question surrounding their choice of facilities had been answered.

The conversation has since expanded beyond the two entertainers, with some social media users calling for alternative public washroom arrangements.

TikToker Rakel Kenya suggested that authorities consider additional facilities to accommodate different users while addressing concerns about privacy and safety.

The debate has highlighted the challenges surrounding public washroom access and the need to consider the experiences of different people using public facilities.
