Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has opened up about what he describes as years of frustration and political sabotage allegedly orchestrated by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, revealing how the fallout ultimately cost him his Cabinet job and influenced his decision to exit government entirely.

Speaking during an interview, Kuria claimed that Gachagua directly influenced his dismissal during the 2024 Cabinet reshuffle.

According to Kuria, discussions within government circles singled him out despite his efforts to serve diligently.

“All I was doing was trying to work for my country,” Kuria said. “When the Cabinet was being reconstituted, he told the president to appoint anyone else apart from me. I was dropped, and new people came in.”

Kuria alleged that Gachagua justified his removal by arguing that the Mt Kenya region already had enough Cabinet representation and that he was satisfied with the balance at the time.

After his dismissal, Kuria was appointed as a presidential advisor at State House, a role he later resigned from.

He explained that his decision followed the destructive Saba Saba demonstrations, during which businesses were looted and property worth millions destroyed.

“As a known pro-business leader, my community was questioning me, and I had no answers,” Kuria said. “I told the president that for me to look at issues objectively, I needed to step aside as an advisor. We agreed to remain friends.”

However, Kuria said his frustrations with Gachagua did not end there.

He accused the former deputy president of continuing to undermine him even after his resignation, including claims that Kuria sponsored candidates to split votes in by-elections.

The former CS also criticised Gachagua’s leadership within the opposition, describing it as divisive and unworkable.

He further recalled being questioned for engaging in government activities in counties such as Kisumu and Siaya, including tree-planting initiatives.

“I suffered,” Kuria said, summing up what he portrayed as a sustained campaign of political hostility both inside and outside government.
