Residents of Nyamira County are struggling to come to terms with the death of 20-year-old Faith Kemunto, whose disappearance sparked weeks of uncertainty before investigators made a grim discovery.
Faith, who was preparing to begin her studies at Machakos University, reportedly left home in late July 2025 to meet her boyfriend, Gideon Makori. According to family members, she had previously visited his home on several occasions and there was little reason to suspect anything unusual when she left.
As days turned into weeks without her return, relatives grew concerned. Their worries were initially eased by messages sent from Faith’s phone, assuring them that she was safe and doing well. However, subtle changes in communication soon raised questions.
Family members noticed that the messages did not sound like Faith. The wording, tone, and responses appeared different from her usual style. What began as a feeling that something was wrong eventually prompted them to seek help from authorities.
Investigators later launched an inquiry that led detectives to a remote site in Nyamira, where a body believed to be Faith’s was recovered from a shallow grave. The discovery transformed a missing-person case into a murder investigation.
Police allege that after Faith’s death, her phone continued to be used to communicate with relatives in an effort to conceal what had happened. The case took another turn when the prime suspect reportedly left the area and was later arrested in Nairobi. Authorities said he was found in possession of Faith’s mobile phone at the time of his arrest.
The case has triggered widespread outrage, with many Kenyans expressing grief and demanding justice for the young woman whose future was abruptly cut short.
As court proceedings begin, investigators continue piecing together the events that led to Faith’s death, while her family seeks answers and closure.
