Norway is entering a new royal era following the death of King Harald V, with his son set to take over the country’s throne.
Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35am on Friday, August 28, at the age of 89, according to the Royal Palace.
His death ends a 35-year reign that began in 1991 after he succeeded his father, King Olav V.
The succession now places Crown Prince Haakon at the centre of Norway’s monarchy. He is expected to formally assume the role of king as the royal family begins the transition.
The change represents more than a new name at the top of the Norwegian royal household. It marks the first transfer of the crown in more than three decades.
Haakon has spent years preparing for the responsibilities of the throne through official duties and public engagements.
His succession comes at a challenging time for the royal family. Questions surrounding Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein have attracted significant public attention and criticism.
The controversy has also emerged as public support for Norway’s monarchy has weakened. A February poll cited in reports put support at 54%, compared with 72% in 2024.
The new king will therefore inherit both the responsibilities of the crown and the task of navigating a changing public mood.

The late king was regarded as a moderniser who changed aspects of the royal court and welcomed commoners into the family through the marriages of his children.

As Norway mourns Harald, attention will increasingly turn to Haakon and the direction he chooses for the monarchy.
