Bungoma Senator David Wakoli was today forced to step down from chairing the senate committee hearing audit questions raised against governor George Natembeya.
This is after the county chief presented and played a video before the committee showing the Bungoma lawmaker making ‘threatening remarks’ against him ahead of the committee hearing.
While attending a local function with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula in Bungoma last week, Senator David Wakoli went hard of Natembeya, declared him guilty and promised to ‘deal with him squarely’ when he appears before the committee.
“I want to ask that you switch on your TVs next Thursday and see how I will deal with Natembeya. He is the biblical Barabbas who was supposed to be crucified but was saved. We shall now crucify him,” said Senator Wakoli in reference to what he was planning to do during today’s hearing.
However, while appearing before the Senate committee on Livestock and Blue Economy today, a furious Natembeya went for the senator’s neck armed with evidence.
After accusing the committee chairperson ( Senator Wakoli ) of biasness, the county chief went ahead and produced the clip showing the senator’s harsh remarks. He then demanded that the lawmaker recuses himself from chairing the committee.
“The chairman appeared to have already declared me guilty on these issues. This is a quasi judicial sitting and I demand that he recuses himself from chairing this meeting,” demanded Natembeya.
Other senators part of the committee backed him up and allowed the video to be played before the house. After the video was played and watched by all members, the lawmakers agreed that the senator had indeed threatened and made beforehand judgement on the matter before the house.
Senator Wakoli had no option but to agree with the resolution of the members. He gave up the chairperson’s seat. “I will proceed as a neutral member of the committee,” said Wakoli as he called on Senator Tom Ojienda to chair the meeting.
