Many people give up when life becomes difficult. For Fred, however, every setback became a stepping stone toward a dream that once seemed impossible.
Today, he is preparing to begin flying commercially, but his journey to the cockpit started with pain, loss, and years of sacrifice.
Fred grew up in a family that was doing well financially. His father owned businesses, including a petrol station, and life was comfortable. However, everything changed after his father’s death.
According to Fred, relatives took over the family’s property and businesses, leaving the family with very little. As they struggled to cope with the loss, another challenge emerged when he became seriously ill with tuberculosis.
The disease affected him physically and emotionally. During that period, he also faced stigma from members of the community because of the visible effects of the medication he was taking.
While still trying to recover, Fred suffered another heartbreaking loss when his mother became seriously ill and later passed away. The death of the person he was closest to left him devastated.
Eventually, an uncle and aunt helped him find a new home at Watoto Children’s Home, where he received support and an opportunity to continue his education.
Although he performed well in school, things did not always go according to plan. His academic results later affected his chances of pursuing his dream career immediately.
Despite the disappointment, Fred refused to give up. He later found an opportunity at an aviation maintenance company, where he asked for any work available, regardless of the position.
What followed was a remarkable display of determination.
For three years, he worked without a salary while learning about aircraft maintenance and inspections. The experience gave him valuable exposure to the aviation industry and allowed him to stay close to the career he desperately wanted.
His dedication eventually caught the attention of people who believed in his potential.
Through support from well-wishers and aviation professionals, Fred secured funding to attend flying school. He embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly and graduated as the top-performing student in his class.
Even after completing his training, challenges continued. He missed scholarships and faced multiple visa rejections. Yet he remained focused on his goal.
His persistence finally paid off when an opportunity arose for a pilot position. He successfully applied and is now on the path toward obtaining his commercial pilot licence.
