Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party Presidential candidate Raila Odinga with his Running Mate Martha Karua on Monday led their team in filing Presidential election petition at the Supreme Court. The Azimio team is seeking to have Deputy President William Ruto’s victory in the 9th August Presidential election nullified. Ruto was declared President elect on the 16 August by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati accompanied by two of his commissioners with the other four having failed to recognise the results.
Meanwhile, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati will have a series of questions to answer as some allegations filed by Azimio targets at personal capacity. Azimio legal team in their petition accused Chebukati of having deliberately allowed Electoral malpractices in favour of President elect William Ruto. Some of the accusations against Chebukati included allowing the alleged deliberate compromise of IEBC portals, excluding other commissioners in critical decision making and going into the election with a predetermined decision to interfere with the credibility in the process.
Azimio team has placed forward a tough consequence against IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati in regards to the ongoing Presidential election petition. As party of their forty page prayers to the Supreme Court submitted on Friday, Raila Odinga’s side has demanded payment directly from Wafula Chebukati on costs incurred during the period of the presidential election petition. In case the Supreme Court in going through Azimio la Umoja petition finds Wafula Chebukati guilty of alleged electoral misconduct, he could be forced to pay huge sums of money to the petitioners from as an individual.
This will only come if the final verdict of the Supreme court nullifies the Presidential election and finds Chebukati guilty of crimes filed against him by the Azimio la Umoja team. Upon being found guilty, the Supreme court will also have to approve this prayer for Chebukati to pay the sum amount demanded from him as compensation to the Azimio la team. This new tough demand by Azimio la Umoja surely leaves Chebukati with a headache to persevere throughout the electoral election petition period.
