Nyamira and Homa Bay counties have been thrown into mourning following the shocking murder of Faith Kemunto Obino, a 20-year-old woman who went missing a month ago.

Kemunto, who was set to join Machakos University in September, disappeared from her parents’ home in Maosi village, Nyamira County.

Her family reported the matter at Nyamusi Police Station after attempts to reach her failed since her phone had been switched off.

The breakthrough came when Kemunto’s brother received a disturbing text message from her number.

Investigators later revealed that the message was allegedly sent by her boyfriend, Gideon Makori.

In the message, he demanded Sh500, which the brother declined to send. A day later, another message followed with a chilling admission that Kemunto had been killed and buried.

Her uncle, Maroko Maina, said the message stated that they had killed Fay and buried her.

The sender also gave directions to the burial site, a quarry in Ekerenyo. When police and family members visited the site, they first came across clothing believed to belong to Kemunto.

A foul smell confirmed their worst fears, and the area was immediately secured as a crime scene.

On Thursday morning, a joint team of DCI officers and public health officials exhumed a decomposing body suspected to be Kemunto’s.

A post-mortem will confirm her identity.

Her parents described her as hard-working and focused, though her mother admitted she had once cautioned her about prioritising studies over relationships.

The family is now seeking justice as detectives intensify the search for the boyfriend, who remains at large.

Authorities have assured the family and residents that investigations are ongoing and that those behind the brutal killing will face the law.
