The University of Nairobi has appointed renowned gynaecologic oncologist Prof. Rose Jepchumba Kosgei as the new Associate Dean in charge of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Her appointment, announced on Tuesday, May 27, marks a significant leadership transition at one of Kenya’s top medical training institutions. Prof. Kosgei takes over from Prof. Fredrick C. F. Otieno, whose tenure was credited with strengthening academic programmes and improving undergraduate medical training at the university.
The appointment was confirmed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ayub Gitau, who said Kosgei will serve a three-year term overseeing undergraduate academic affairs within the health sciences faculty.
Prof. Kosgei is widely respected in Kenya’s medical circles for her contribution to women’s health, cancer research, and medical education. She currently serves in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is also the coordinator of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Programme at the university.
Over the years, she has built a strong reputation as a researcher, lecturer, mentor, and clinician. Her work has particularly focused on improving maternal healthcare services and advancing treatment and awareness of gynecologic cancers in Kenya and beyond.
The accomplished academic holds a doctorate in Health Sciences from Ghent University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has also undertaken advanced specialised studies in gynecologic oncology, further cementing her expertise in the field.
Colleagues within the Faculty of Health Sciences describe her as a transformative leader with a passion for mentorship and healthcare system strengthening. Her research and policy contributions have helped shape conversations around women’s healthcare and specialist medical training in East Africa.
The university thanked Prof. Otieno for his years of service and leadership, noting that his efforts played a key role in enhancing the quality of undergraduate education within the faculty.
Kosgei now steps into the new role at a time when Kenyan universities are increasingly seeking stronger research output, innovation, and quality medical training to meet growing healthcare demands.
