The family of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo is still struggling to come to terms with her sudden passing as a dispute over the custody of her two children, Sky Victor and Danivictor, continues to intensify. Betty died on November 10 while receiving treatment for an aggressive form of blood cancer at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Her brother, Edward Kang’ethe Mbugua, revealed during a TikTok Live session that the family learned of her critical condition too late, only discovering the severity of her illness after she had already been admitted. He described the final days as emotionally overwhelming for the family.
Mbugua addressed the growing public debate on who should take custody of the children. The minors had been living with their mother and her partner, Hiram “Tash” Gitau, in Edenville Estate, and maintained a close relationship with him. However, Mbugua insisted that the children should now be under the care of their biological father, Pastor Victor Kanyari, explaining that he has always remained active in their lives even after his separation from Betty.
He argued that the existence of a living, present father should be the primary factor guiding custody decisions. Mbugua dismissed the idea of allowing the children to choose where they want to live, stressing they are too young to make such a significant decision. He also cautioned that no one has the authority to relocate them outside the country without the family’s consent.
According to Mbugua, the ongoing debate has deeply affected Kanyari, who recently reached out regarding the children’s welfare. He revealed that the pastor met the children shortly after Betty’s death but did not enter her home.
Mbugua further stated that Betty and Tash were never legally married, saying their public celebrations were not official unions. The family now hopes that decisions regarding the children will be handled with sensitivity as they continue mourning their loss.
