Residents of the Juakali area were left in shock on Thursday night after a police officer opened fire at a crowded local bar, disrupting what had been a normal evening of drinking and celebration. According to eyewitness reports, the officer whose identity has not yet been officially disclosed fired several shots into the air, causing panic among customers and staff.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at a popular bar in the informal settlement, which was packed with patrons enjoying drinks, music, and football on the big screen. Witnesses say the officer, who was off-duty and in civilian clothing, appeared intoxicated and got into an argument with one of the customers shortly before drawing his weapon.

“He walked in and ordered a drink like everyone else,” said one of the waiters at the scene. “But a few minutes later, he was shouting at someone across the table. Then suddenly, he pulled out a gun and fired into the air. People screamed and ran in all directions.”

No fatalities were reported, but several individuals sustained minor injuries while trying to flee the bar in a stampede. Tables were overturned, bottles shattered, and the once-lively atmosphere turned chaotic within seconds.

Police officers from a nearby station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The suspect was disarmed and taken into custody pending investigations. Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei confirmed the arrest, stating that the officer would face disciplinary action and possibly criminal charges if found to have acted unlawfully.

“We take this matter very seriously,” Bungei said in a press statement. “No officer is above the law. Firearms should never be used in public spaces unless there is a legitimate threat, which does not appear to be the case here.”

The incident has reignited public concern over gun discipline among law enforcement officers and the rising number of cases involving off-duty police misconduct. Human rights organizations have called for a full investigation and psychological evaluations for officers who are authorized to carry firearms even while off duty.

“This could have ended in a massacre,” said a representative from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). “It is unacceptable that an officer entrusted with public safety would act so recklessly.”

Residents of Juakali are now calling for stricter oversight and training for officers, especially those working in high-stress environments. Meanwhile, the bar remains closed for inspection and evidence gathering.

As investigations continue, many in the community are left shaken, hoping for accountability and assurance that such an incident will never happen again.
