Bishop Ben Kiengei has broken his silence over allegations surrounding funds raised to support the Kaluma family. In a detailed statement shared on Monday, August 17, Kiengei said his involvement was mainly focused on mobilising support and following up on projects intended to improve the family’s living conditions.
He said a fundraising event at JCM Church raised Sh2.5 million, which he claimed was deposited directly into the family’s account.
He added that Sh800,000 in cash was handed directly to Kaluma Boy KE and his brother.
Kiengei further explained that the family had agreed to acquire an acre of land in Chaka for farming.
He said he later convinced Mofarm to provide the family with an additional quarter-acre plot, where a house was constructed.
According to bishop, he also contributed Sh500,000 towards the installation of gypsum and glass in the house after the family’s finances were depleted.
Kiengei said he had also supported the family’s medical and educational needs.
He claimed that he spent nearly Sh1 million while keeping Baba Kaluma at Jumuia Hospital Huruma for two months and later sent Sh60,000 through his personal assistant to support therapy. He also said Kaluma secured a university scholarship through his sister Wanja Nyarari and received personal items worth Sh367,000.
The bishop questioned claims surrounding the overall Sh17 million raised for the family, asking who collected the money, which account was used and who handled construction payments.
He also questioned why the family was allegedly considering selling the land and receiving construction funds back while other family members wanted the house completed.
