In a recent roadshow in Kikuyu, Murang’a County, popular Kikuyu benga musician Samidoh Muchoki and Kameme FM presenter Muthoni Wa Kirumba stirred up significant controversy. The event attracted a large crowd, where Kenyans expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the cancellation of Samidoh’s scheduled performance in the Kikuyu constituency.
During the event, when Samidoh was given the chance to address the audience, questions arose about the sudden cancellation of his show. Seizing the moment, Muthoni Wa Kirumba revealed that the cancellation was orchestrated by Kimani Ichungwah, the Kikuyu constituency member of parliament. According to Muthoni, Samidoh was fully prepared to perform, but Ichungwah had allegedly threatened the venue with closure if they hosted him.
Muthoni further elaborated that Ichungwah’s actions were rooted in political rivalry, as Samidoh had shown support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a political opponent of Ichungwah. This revelation sparked outrage among the audience, who felt that Ichungwah was using his influence to suppress artistic expression based on personal vendettas.
Samidoh who was present during Muthoni’s remarks, appeared to agree with her statements, amplifying the sentiment of discontent among the crowd. Many expressed their anger, stating that if Ichungwah attempted to interfere again, they would take matters into their own hands.
The incident underscores the intersection of politics and the arts in Kenya, highlighting the challenges artists face in navigating political landscapes while trying to connect with their audiences. As tensions rise, the future of Samidoh’s performances in the region remains uncertain.
