A Kenyan family has been reunited with Nicodemus Emus Lojok after his story of reportedly living on the streets in the United States for about seven years sparked widespread concern on social media.
Nicodemus, a native of Turkana County, was reportedly separated from his family after the breakdown of his marriage to an American woman. The couple have two children together, and his difficult circumstances only became widely known after an emotional appeal for help circulated online.
On Monday, August 17, Nicodemus’s cousin, Micah Ekai, announced that he had finally managed to speak with him. Ekai shared screenshots of their video call, confirming that the family had made contact with Nicodemus and learned that he was safe.
Ekai expressed deep relief after the reunion, saying he was grateful to everyone who supported the family and helped in efforts to locate Nicodemus. He said hearing his cousin’s voice and knowing that he was doing well brought immense joy after a difficult period for the family.
The reunion followed an outpouring of concern from Kenyans in Kenya and the diaspora after details of Nicodemus’s situation spread rapidly across social media. Members of the Kenyan community rallied around the case, helping amplify the family’s search for him.
Nicodemus’s story reportedly attracted particular attention because of the circumstances surrounding his marriage and subsequent separation. According to the published account, his marriage to his American wife ended, after which he reportedly spent years experiencing homelessness in the US.
The situation also drew attention to Nicodemus’s estranged wife, Renee Jordan Emus. She reportedly deactivated her Facebook account following intense public scrutiny and questions from members of the public about Nicodemus’s circumstances.
Despite the difficult years, the contact between Nicodemus and his cousin has given the family renewed hope. Ekai thanked those who helped spread the story and supported the family during what he described as a distressing period.
The video call marked an important moment for the family, bringing reassurance that Nicodemus had been found and allowing relatives to establish direct contact with him after years of separation.
The case has also highlighted the challenges some Kenyans living abroad can face despite the perception that life overseas automatically guarantees financial stability and security.
