Media personality Jeff Koinange found himself at the centre of a light-hearted Gen Z moment after a Kenyan presenter confronted him with the viral phrase, “Bag ni ya nini?” shortly after his arrival in Seattle, United States.
Jeff had just landed in Seattle on Thursday, August 13, where he was welcomed by members of the Kenyan community ahead of a Mugithi event scheduled for Saturday.
A video shared on TikTok captured the veteran journalist receiving a bouquet before greeting Kenyans who had gathered at the airport.
The relaxed welcome quickly took an unexpected turn when a presenter wearing a black Kenyan flag T-shirt introduced the trending question.
“They are telling me to ask you, ‘Bag ni ya nini?’” the presenter told Jeff.
The veteran media personality immediately broke into laughter before attempting the response associated with the viral phrase.
“Alele mtoto. Sijui, but hiyo,” Jeff replied, appearing amused but uncertain about whether he had given the correct answer.
His pronunciation of “Alele”, delivered with his distinctive English accent, prompted more laughter from the presenter. Jeff also joined in, turning the exchange into a playful airport moment.
The encounter offered a humorous glimpse of how quickly Kenyan social media trends can cross generations and even follow public figures abroad.
Away from the viral slang, Jeff also spoke about his journey from Kenya to the US, describing the flight as a long one and expressing gratitude for arriving safely.
He said he was excited to be in Seattle and was looking forward to the event.
The presenter also asked him about Pastor Ng’ang’a’s song “Tunaenda Seattle”, but Jeff admitted that he had not heard it.
“I have not heard that one,” he said jokingly.
Jeff is in Seattle to host a country Mugithi show on Saturday, August 15. The event will also feature Mugithi performers including Samidoh, Kareh B, Sir Elvis and DJ Pierra Makena.
He encouraged Kenyans living in the US to attend, promising an entertaining experience.
“I would tell people to all come out this Saturday, August 15. It is going to be smoking,” Jeff said.
For a moment, however, it was not the upcoming show that stole the spotlight, but Jeff’s unexpected attempt to decode one of Kenya’s latest viral Gen Z phrases.
