Ray Amber

When Kenyan socialite and influencer Amber Ray appears at a nightclub, the venue is often packed with fans eager to see her in person. Reports that she charges at least KSh200,000 per appearance have sparked debate online, with some questioning whether clubs genuinely make money from celebrity hosting or whether such events are simply marketing stunts.

The discussion has also led to speculation on social media about whether inflated sales figures at some entertainment venues could be linked to money laundering. However, there is no evidence that hiring Amber Ray or other celebrity hosts is, by itself, connected to illegal financial activities. Industry players maintain that celebrity hosting is a legitimate marketing strategy used to increase foot traffic and boost sales.

How celebrity hosting works

In a recent video circulating online, Amber Ray is seen hosting at a packed nightclub, engaging the crowd with a microphone as fans record the moment on their phones amid music and flashing lights.

Such appearances are typically brief, lasting a few hours, during which the celebrity interacts with guests, takes photos, promotes the venue on social media and helps create excitement around the event.

Her partner, businessman Kennedy Rapudo, has previously defended the profession, saying club hosting is legitimate work that relies on an individual’s popularity and ability to attract customers. He has also described Amber Ray as one of Kenya’s highest-paid club hosts because of her strong personal brand and influence.

Why clubs are willing to pay

For nightclub owners, the goal is often straightforward: attract more customers than on an ordinary night.

A well-known celebrity can generate buzz days before an event through social media promotions, encouraging fans to reserve tables and attend in large numbers. Increased attendance can translate into higher sales of food, drinks and VIP packages.

Marketing experts note that the appearance fee is usually viewed as a promotional expense, much like advertising. If a celebrity helps fill the venue and encourages customers to spend more than they otherwise would, the investment can be commercially worthwhile.

Why this matters

The business model highlights the growing influence of social media personalities in Kenya’s entertainment industry.

Rather than relying solely on musicians or DJs, many clubs now use influencers and celebrities to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive nightlife market.

At the same time, discussions about unusually high revenues at some entertainment venues have occasionally fuelled public speculation about financial misconduct. However, allegations of money laundering require evidence and investigation by relevant authorities. The fact that a club pays a celebrity a substantial appearance fee does not, on its own, indicate any illegal activity.

For many venues, celebrity hosting remains a marketing strategy aimed at increasing visibility, attracting larger crowds and boosting revenue during competitive weekends and special events.
