Kenya Power has confirmed that its customer service account on X was compromised after posts promoting cryptocurrency appeared on the platform.
The account, @KenyaPower_Care, is commonly used by the electricity distributor to communicate with customers about electricity-related issues and respond to complaints.
The suspicious posts appeared on Wednesday, September 30, and contained messages that were unrelated to Kenya Power’s normal operations. Some of the posts directed users to a cryptocurrency-related allocation checker.
A Kenya Power customer care representative confirmed the security breach on Thursday, October 1, and asked customers to temporarily use the company’s other verified social media platforms while the matter was being addressed.
The utility later issued a security message reminding customers to confirm that they were communicating through its genuine platforms.
Kenya Power also cautioned customers against sharing confidential information with anyone claiming to represent the company. The utility said its customer service teams do not ask for details such as mobile money information, bank details or PINs when handling complaints.
The cryptocurrency messages were subsequently removed from the X account, suggesting that Kenya Power had regained access to the page.
The compromised account is an important communication channel for customers seeking assistance, including reporting electricity faults and following updates from the power distributor.
The incident follows an earlier cyber-related claim involving Kenya Power in July 2023. A Sudanese hacker group claimed at the time that it had breached the utility’s systems and interfered with its electricity token service. Kenya Power rejected the claim.
