Winnie Byanyima, the wife of prominent opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, has responded to those urging her to go into exile following the intense political climate in Uganda.
The call for her to leave the country comes after two female activists in Uganda, Dr Sarah Bireete and Maria Matembe, were abducted days ago, with their whereabouts still unknown.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, later came online via his usual X (formerly Twitter) account, acknowledging the arrests.
The statement from Muhoozi stunned many, forcing them to warn Byanyima to leave the country for her safety.
Just like the women arrested Byanyima is also among those opposing voices that have refused to be silenced by the regime, making her one of the possible targets.
However, Byanyima declined the offer from those voices and stood her ground to stay in the country and fight for what she believes is right.
“Thank you for your concern. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba continues to threaten Dr Kizza Besigye and me. We take these threats seriously, but we will not bow to intimidation or abandon our country,” she stated.
She then boldly made it clear that she, together with his team, will continue to fight for justice and pursue every lawful means to restrain him.
“Uganda must be governed by laws, not by fear. Muhoozi is not above the law,” she continued.
Byanyima has made it clear that she is not ready to leave her husband behind, and she is ready to go through it all even if it means her death.
