Peter Kinyata

Peter Kinyita, the Gatundu South Constituency Development Fund (CDF) chairperson, has spoken out for the first time following the death of his two-year-old son, who drowned in a swimming pool earlier this week.

Kinyita, who shares the child with his wife Mercy Wanjiru, took to Facebook with a brief but emotional post featuring a broken-heart and crying emoji, signalling the depth of the family’s grief.

The post drew an outpouring of sympathy from Kenyans online.

Radio presenter Muthoni wa Kirumba, known on air as Baby Top, was reportedly present when the tragedy occurred.

The Kameme FM host had been absent from her show in recent days, with co-host Chef Gathemba telling listeners she had stepped away to support a close friend going through loss.

Baby Top later shared a video referencing scripture from Psalms as a message of comfort to the grieving parents, extending condolences to both Peter and Mercy.

Social media influencer Peter Mwangi also weighed in, urging Kenyans to refrain from politicising the tragedy.

He described Kinyita as a humble leader who has never used politics for personal gain, and appealed to the public to give the family privacy and space to heal, noting that Mercy is currently expectant.

Mwangi extended condolences on behalf of his own family, also acknowledging Baby Top and family friend identified as GGwa Kagombe.

Hundreds of Kenyans flooded social media with messages of support for the family, with many offering prayers and words of encouragement during the mourning period.

No further details on the circumstances surrounding the drowning have been made public. The family has not issued an official statement beyond Kinyita’s social media post.
