Instances of people losing significant amounts of money after withdrawing from banks have been increasing across many regions of the Republic of Kenya.
In the latest case, a manager in Mombasa lost over Sh600,000 when thieves broke into his car near a mosque.Authorities in Mombasa are investigating the incident, which occurred on March 16, 2026.
Reports indicate that the manager had withdrawn Sh646,120 from Standard Chartered Bank at Treasury Square at around 1:00 p.m.
He placed the cash on the rear passenger seat of his Toyota Succeed before driving to Baluchi Mosque near Makadara Grounds for prayers.
Upon returning, he discovered that his car had been broken into.
The driver’s door lock had been tampered with, and the full amount of money had been stolen.Police who visited the scene confirmed that investigations are underway, though no suspects have been apprehended so far.
Officers have advised motorists and the public to be cautious when handling large sums of money.
They recommended not leaving cash or valuables unattended in vehicles and staying vigilant in public spaces.
Authorities also suggested using safer alternatives, such as bank transfers or mobile money, to reduce the risk of carrying large amounts of cash.
Security experts note that criminals often track their victims to find opportunities for robbery, making awareness and caution essential.
