Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his intention to join Kenya’s united opposition as he prepares for the 2027 General Election. Maraga, widely respected for his landmark 2017 ruling that annulled the presidential election, announced his presidential bid earlier this year. Now, he is positioning himself as a central figure in efforts to build a strong opposition coalition.
Maraga’s move comes at a pivotal time in Kenyan politics. The recent passing of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has left a leadership void, while the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reshaped political alliances. Kalonzo Musyoka has assumed leadership of the Azimio coalition, but the alliance remains fragmented, needing credible leaders to mount a serious challenge to President William Ruto’s re-election campaign.
Unlike many politicians, Maraga brings a reputation for integrity that transcends ethnic divisions. His courageous 2017 Supreme Court decision earned him both national and international respect, especially among young voters frustrated by corruption and political infighting. He has been engaging with communities across Kenya, particularly connecting with Gen Z voters dissatisfied with the current administration’s economic policies and governance.
Despite this, Maraga faces significant challenges. He hails from the Kisii community, a smaller political base, and competes with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who enjoys stronger grassroots support in the region. Critics question whether Maraga’s campaign has the organizational strength needed to win a national election.
By joining forces with the broader opposition coalition, Maraga aims to combine his moral authority with the coalition’s political infrastructure. His campaign slogan, “Reset, Restore, Rebuild,” appeals to voters seeking change from Kenya’s entrenched political elite. While his journey will be tough, Maraga’s entry has already injected fresh momentum into the 2027 race.
