Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have captured Brian Otiende Anyanga, a man believed to be the mastermind of a cartel that has been swindling property owners and developers in Nairobi.
The suspect was arrested in a house along Katulo Road, Buruburu, after a two-week manhunt.
His capture followed the earlier arrest of his alleged accomplice, Lawrence Martins Ochieng, who had been linked to fake lease certificates in a land fraud case.According to investigators, the cartel had set its sights on two prime parcels of land in Pumwani.
Victims were duped into paying large sums of money for fraudulent documents.
One victim is reported to have lost more than Ksh 553,000 before the scam was stopped.
Following Lawrence’s arrest on December 2, detectives launched a manhunt for Brian.
Their efforts led them to Buruburu, where he was taken into custody without resistance.
At the time of his arrest, Brian was already facing charges in a separate gold scam case and had been out on bond. The suspect is expected to appear before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday to answer charges related to land fraud.
Detectives also recovered suspicious land documents, which are being examined to establish whether officials at the Lands Registry may have aided the scheme.
Authorities described the arrest as a major step in dismantling criminal networks that prey on unsuspecting property owners.
The DCI has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are likely as efforts to secure justice for the victims continue.
