Concerns are intensifying over the deteriorating health of veteran Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye with his family, party and fellow political figures warning that his condition has reached a critical stage while he remains detained.

The People’s Front for Freedom Besigye’s political party says credible reports indicate he was rushed overnight from Luzira Maximum Security Prison to a medical facility in Kampala under heavy security, after showing signs of serious illness.

Party officials described his health as critical and deteriorating and called on authorities to allow Besigye’s personal doctors and family immediate unrestricted access to assess and treat his condition.

Besigye’s wife Winnie Byanyima a noted international advocate, has been vocal about the situation, claiming that the 69 year old politician suffered acute stomach pain, high fever and severe dehydration and alleging a lack of adequate care in detention.

Byanyima went further to suggest that President Yoweri Museveni’s government might be intent on harming Besigye even letting him die behind bars an accusation the authorities have denied.

The Uganda Prisons Service insists that Besigye’s recent hospital visit was a routine medical check-up asserting he is receiving the same care as other inmates and remains able to carry out daily activities.

However PFF and supporters dismiss this characterization insisting the official account downplays the true severity of his health issues.

Prominent opposition leader Bobi Wine has also publicly expressed concern over Besigye’s condition urging solidarity and prayers for his recovery and calling for urgent attention to his healthcare needs.

Besigye has been detained since November 2024 on treason-related charges widely viewed by critics as part of a broader crackdown on opposition ahead of Uganda’s politically charged environment under Museveni’s long-standing rule.
