After four decades of service, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho is expected to leave office amid looming changes in the top police leadership.

According to sources, the police boss who is currently serving on contract after attaining the mandatory retirement age, could soon be out.

Kanja was appointed as police boss in September 2024 to succeed Japheth Koome whose tumultuous reign came to a sudden end at the height of the Gen Z protests.

Prior to his appointment as the IG, Kanja had served as Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya Police Service wing for close to two years. He had succeeded Edward Njoroge Mbugua in the position in 2023.

Kanja, 62, had previously served as the GSU commandant, the position he held for over five years.

The one-time Kilifi County commander joined the police service in 1985 and quickly rose through the ranks to take the command 39 years later.

The reported looming changes come at the time the country is preparing for the 2027 general election.
