A strong political statement by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has ignited fresh debate following recent remarks by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi calling for a constitutional referendum before the next general election. Amisi questioned the timing and motive behind the proposal, linking it to long standing political interests rather than public needs.
According to Amisi, the leader in question has spent decades in government and is now portraying urgency around constitutional issues that had not previously been raised with similar force. He argued that the sudden push for a referendum ignores pressing national concerns facing ordinary Kenyans.
Amisi said the remarks reflect what he described as political confusion and detachment from reality. He accused the senior government official of shifting focus away from economic hardship, unemployment and the rising cost of living.
The lawmaker noted that the official currently holds one of the highest positions in government and has enjoyed influence across multiple administrations. He questioned why constitutional concerns are being raised now, after nearly forty years in public service.
Amisi warned that pushing constitutional changes under the threat of declaring future elections unconstitutional could destabilise the country. He said such statements risk creating unnecessary tension and uncertainty ahead of the 2027 polls.
He further argued that Kenya’s problems cannot be solved through constant political restructuring. Amisi maintained that leadership should prioritise service delivery rather than what he termed political self preservation.
Mudavadi has not responded directly to Amisi’s comments. However, the referendum proposal continues to spark intense discussion within political and legal circles.
