Former Interior and Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has shared how a personal encounter with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema inspired his desire to run for Kenya’s presidency in 2027.
Speaking on Sunday, October 5, during an Adventist Men Organisation breakfast meeting at the SDA Church in Lavington, Matiang’i recalled being sent to Zambia in 2022 as Kenya’s special envoy soon after Hichilema’s victory over the late Edgar Lungu.
Matiang’i said that because both he and President Hichilema are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Zambian leader invited him to his home instead of meeting at the State House. During the visit, the two shared a spiritual moment as they sang a hymn in their native languages, leaving their security teams surprised by the informal and humble setting.
According to Matiang’i, President Hichilema opened up about his long and difficult journey in opposition. He spoke about facing repeated arrests, harassment, and even the tragic killing of his lawyer. Despite these challenges, Hichilema said he remained determined to fight for democracy and better leadership in Zambia.
Matiang’i said this story deeply moved him and made him reflect on his own duty to his country. He realized that leadership requires courage, sacrifice, and a strong commitment to serve others. The former CS emphasized that Kenya also needs leaders who are ready to stand for truth, justice, and unity, even in the face of adversity.
He urged Kenyans, especially the youth, to rise above tribal divisions and hold leaders accountable. Matiang’i reminded them that freedom and progress come through sacrifice, just as the nation’s founders gave their lives for independence.
He also cautioned that as the 2027 elections draw near, false stories and personal attacks will increase. However, he encouraged Kenyans to focus on leaders with integrity, performance, and vision rather than ethnic background. Matiang’i concluded by saying that Kenya’s future depends on unity, honesty, and service-driven leadership.
