A Nairobi man has been arraigned in court after allegedly assaulting a married woman who spurned his romantic advances and blocked his calls. The shocking incident has stirred debate on rising cases of gender-based violence linked to rejection and obsession.
According to police records, the accused, whose identity has been withheld pending trial, had persistently pursued the woman despite her repeated refusals. Matters escalated when she decided to block his number to cut off all communication. Enraged by her decision, the suspect allegedly confronted her near her residence and launched a violent attack.
The court heard that the woman sustained injuries during the altercation and was forced to seek medical attention. Prosecutors argued that the man’s actions not only violated her rights but also posed a serious threat to her safety and dignity.
During his appearance before the magistrate, the accused denied the charges and requested lenient bail terms. However, the prosecution opposed his release, citing the risk of intimidation against the victim, who is still recovering from the traumatic experience. The magistrate directed that the case be mentioned later this month, with a ruling on bail conditions expected soon.
Outside the courtroom, activists and legal experts condemned the incident, urging stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from harassment and assault. “No woman should fear violence simply for saying no. This case should send a message that rejection is not an excuse for abuse,” said one rights advocate.
The victim, whose identity is also being protected, expressed relief that justice processes had begun but appealed for protection as the case proceeds. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and warned against the growing trend of men resorting to violence after rejection, stressing that such behavior will face the full force of the law.
