Kacheliba Member of Parliament, Hon. Titus Lotee, has called for immediate accountability from Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja over what he describes as a deceptive move regarding the absence of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Douglas Kanja Lagat.
In a strongly worded statement on #MorningCafeTV47, MP Lotee accused IG Kanja of approving leave for DIG Lagat while the public was made to believe that Lagat had voluntarily stepped aside. According to Lotee, this misrepresentation amounts to a breach of public trust.
“IG Kanja approved leave for DIG Lagat. Both should be held responsible for lying claiming he stepped aside while he had actually gone on leave, with IG Kanja’s approval,” said Lotee during the televised segment. He demanded that the Inspector General admit to the misstep and take corrective action.
“If no action is taken, this matter should be brought before the National Assembly for thorough investigation and possible sanctions,” he added.
The controversy has sparked questions about transparency and accountability within the National Police Service. DIG Lagat’s departure from office came amid public pressure over ongoing investigations within the police force, and many believed his stepping aside was a move to allow for independent scrutiny.
Lotee’s remarks suggest that rather than stepping aside, DIG Lagat was granted official leave, misleading the public and possibly undermining the integrity of ongoing inquiries.
The IG’s office has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations. However, political observers say the growing pressure from lawmakers could prompt a parliamentary probe into the conduct of senior police officials.
As scrutiny intensifies, the public awaits clarity on the issue and a demonstration of accountability from the country’s top police leadership.
