Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is now at the center of a high-level investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over claims he orchestrated the violent disruptions witnessed during the June 25 protests in Nairobi.
According to sources close to the investigation, detectives are finalizing a case linking Gachagua to the hiring and funding of individuals accused of sparking chaos during what began as a peaceful demonstration. The protests, which were organized to commemorate past victims of state brutality, quickly turned violent, resulting in destruction of property and several arrests.
Authorities believe the violence may have been deliberately incited to discredit the government or stir public unrest.
Detectives are reportedly analyzing communication records, financial transactions, and witness statements to establish whether Gachagua coordinated the infiltration of protest groups with hired goons.
While no formal charges have been filed yet, pressure is mounting from allies within President William Ruto’s camp, who are calling for Gachagua’s immediate arrest and prosecution if found culpable. This development comes just weeks after Gachagua publicly accused the government of staging the violence to tarnish his name, a claim now being scrutinized by investigators as a possible deflection tactic.
As the DCI closes in on its findings, political observers say the outcome of the probe could have significant implications for the opposition’s image and the country’s 2027 succession politics.
The former Mathira MP has yet to issue a formal response to the latest allegations. Meanwhile, the nation watches closely as the investigation enters its final stages.
