Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has responded sharply to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, telling him that she understands the needs and feelings of the people better than he does.

This came after Gachagua launched a new political party with the slogan “Kusikiza Ground,” meaning “listening to the people.”

Gachagua has been moving across the country, meeting different communities and trying to build support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He has been using the slogan “Kusikiza Ground” to show that his political movement is focused on the voice of ordinary citizens.

However, Waiguru, who is also the Chairperson of the Council of Governors and a senior leader in the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, dismissed Gachagua’s approach.

In a bold statement, she said, “Najua kuskiza ground kukushinda,” which means “I know how to listen to the ground better than you.”

Waiguru added that she has been engaging with the people at the grassroots level for years and does not need to create a new party to understand their problems.

She accused Gachagua of trying to divide the ruling party and create confusion among supporters.

“This idea of forming new parties and claiming to speak for the people is misleading,” Waiguru said. “True leadership is about working with people consistently, not appearing only during elections.”

Political observers say Waiguru’s statement is a clear sign of growing tensions between leaders within the Mount Kenya region.

Both Waiguru and Gachagua are believed to be eyeing top political positions in 2027, and their recent exchanges suggest a battle for influence.

Supporters of both leaders have taken to social media, debating who truly understands the people’s needs and who is better prepared to lead in the future.
