A fresh twist has deepened the mystery surrounding the death of teacher Albert Ojwang after a Nairobi-based technician linked a senior police officer to a secretive nighttime plot to delete CCTV footage from Central Police Station.

According to investigators, Matava confessed that he was paid by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to erase surveillance records from June 6 and 7, the critical period surrounding Ojwang’s detention and death.

Matava claimed he was summoned to the station early on June 8 and led into a restricted office where he was instructed to wipe the storage system completely.

He insisted that the only way to fulfil the OCS’s request was to format the entire system, which he did before receiving a Sh3,000 cash payment.

Adding to the intrigue, the technician said a female officer called him later that evening and again the next morning, asking him to return with a fresh hard drive but to avoid wearing anything that might identify him as a technician. When he finally returned, he noticed the DVR system had already been tampered with. Suspicious of the unfolding events, he avoided further involvement.

The technician’s confession now places the station’s leadership under intense scrutiny, especially after an earlier IPOA report confirmed the deletion of video evidence on the same day Matava visited.

His arrest marks a major development, days after another officer was also detained in connection with Ojwang’s death, which is now widely suspected to be a case of police brutality and cover-up.
