A strong criticism directed at Kenya’s Deputy President has sparked debate over concerns that the office could be used to promote regional interests at the expense of national unity. The Deputy Presidency, which is intended to represent national cohesion and complement the President’s leadership, has been accused of advancing narratives that appear to favour certain regions, particularly Central Kenya, while overlooking others.
In a widely shared social media post, outspoken critic Hon. Caleb Amisi warned that continued regional favouritism could fuel tribal and political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election. He further cautioned that any outbreak of politically driven violence could expose the Deputy President to scrutiny, including possible proceedings before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Amisi stressed the importance of the Deputy President’s constitutional role in supporting the President and stepping in when the President is unavailable. He urged the Deputy President to use the office to promote unity among Kenya’s diverse communities rather than pursuing actions or rhetoric that could deepen existing divisions.
His remarks amounted to a broader appeal for national consciousness, calling for equal efforts to foster unity and development across all parts of the country rather than concentrating on regions perceived to have political significance.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the Deputy President is likely to face increasing calls to champion national cohesion, maintain peace and help bridge ethnic and regional divisions.
