A new controversy has emerged involving Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga after city lawyer Donald Kipkorir publicly questioned claims about her reported history with cancer.
Kipkorir has called on the governor to provide medical documentation relating to the condition, saying that Wanga allegedly disclosed in 2014 that she had been diagnosed with cancer. More than a decade later, the lawyer is now asking questions about how the illness continues to feature in discussions about her personal history.
In a strongly worded challenge, Kipkorir urged Wanga to release her medical records covering the period from 2014 to the present. According to him, making the documents public would help clarify questions about the diagnosis and address speculation surrounding her health history.
“You can’t have cancer for 12 years,” Kipkorir asserted.
He also questioned whether the governor’s reported illness had ever progressed to an advanced stage, using his own family experience with cancer to explain why he considers the subject particularly sensitive.
Kipkorir recalled the difficult period his family endured after his mother was diagnosed with advanced cancer. He said they spent millions of shillings pursuing treatment within Kenya before eventually travelling abroad in search of further medical assistance. According to his account, doctors overseas later delivered a heartbreaking prognosis regarding his mother’s condition.
The lawyer said that experience has influenced his views on discussions surrounding cancer, particularly when the disease becomes part of public or political discourse. His comments have consequently drawn attention to the wider debate over how cancer diagnoses and survival are discussed in public.
However, medical circumstances surrounding cancer are often more complex than the lawyer’s remarks suggest. Cancer refers to numerous different diseases, and outcomes can vary considerably depending on the specific type, stage at diagnosis, treatment received and the individual patient’s circumstances. Some people live for many years following a cancer diagnosis, while others may experience aggressive forms of the disease.
As a result, Kipkorir’s comments remain allegations and personal opinions rather than independently established medical conclusions about Wanga’s health.
The controversy has placed renewed public attention on the governor’s reported medical history. Kipkorir continues to call for the release of documentation, arguing that such records could help resolve the questions he has raised about her reported cancer diagnosis.
