Gatundu North MP Njoroge Kururia has taken aim at National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing them of hypocrisy in their criticism of President William Ruto.
Kururia said the three leaders have no moral ground to now portray Ruto as a failure. “Kimani Ichung’wah, Ndindi Nyoro, and Gachagua should not be saying that Ruto is bad because he was your candidate. You are the ones who brought him to Central Kenya,” the MP stated.
The remarks come amid deepening political divisions in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election. In 2022, leaders from the area played a central role in mobilising support for Ruto’s successful presidential bid under the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Gachagua served as his running mate and deputy until his impeachment in 2024, after which he launched the Democracy for Citizens Party and positioned himself as a key opposition figure.
Nyoro, once seen as a close Ruto ally, recently defected to the People’s Party of Kenya following consultations with Gachagua and other opposition leaders. Ichung’wah, meanwhile, has remained a vocal defender of the administration while frequently clashing with Gachagua.
Kururia, elected as an independent in 2022 before aligning with the government, has consistently backed Ruto. He argued that those who once championed the President in Central Kenya cannot now distance themselves without acknowledging their own role in his rise.
The comments highlight the intensifying contest for influence in the vote-rich region, where loyalty, past alliances and future ambitions continue to shape public discourse as the next election approaches.
