New details have emerged following the death of Sylvia Kemunto, a 20-year-old Multimedia University student, who was murdered on March 30, 2025.

A witness and friend of the suspect revealed he called him after the murder, confessing to strangling her.

Speaking on January 26, 2026, the witness said Mutinda, her alleged killer, called and said he was thinking of leaving the country.

Kemunto’s body was found in a water tank on the rooftop of a hostel within the university compound.

The prime suspect, Philip Eric Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student and her alleged ex-boyfriend, was arrested and charged with murder.

He allegedly visited her room, a fight ensued, and he strangled her. Another version says she rejected his advances, leading to the confrontation.

He put her body in a suitcase and dumped it in the water tank, sealing it with wire and weighing it down with a stone.

Mutinda, arraigned in court on January 26, 2026, has been remanded for 21 days as police investigate.

The case has sparked outrage and raised concerns about femicide and university safety.

The incident has left many questioning security measures on campus and the prevalence of violence against women.

Kemunto’s family and friends are seeking justice, describing her as a bright student with a promising future.

The court is expected to hear the case soon, with many awaiting the outcome.
