Former Ruiru Member of Parliament Esther Nyambura Gathogo has made a bold political comeback after officially joining the Democracy for Citizens Party. The party is led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and is quickly gaining attention across the Mount Kenya region. Her move has sparked fresh debate in Kiambu County as leaders begin positioning themselves for 2027.
Party officials welcomed her warmly and described DCP as the party of the moment. They promised free and fair nominations and said the people will decide who flies the party flag. The message has excited many of her supporters in Ruiru who believe she still has unfinished business.
Gathogo first entered Parliament in 2013 after Ruiru Constituency was created from Juja. She won the seat on the ticket of The National Alliance which later merged into Jubilee. At the time she was seen as a fresh face in politics with strong grassroots support.
During her first term she served in committees dealing with communication and innovation. She focused on development projects and worked closely with residents. However she lost the seat in 2017 in a tight contest.
Ahead of the 2022 elections she briefly joined the United Democratic Alliance before returning to Jubilee. She later contested the Ruiru seat but lost to Simon King’ara of UDA who secured a strong victory. Since then she has remained active on the ground through her Mama Care program that supports women youth and vulnerable families.
Her decision to join DCP now links her directly to Gachagua’s growing political base. The Democracy for Citizens Party was officially launched in 2025 and promotes social justice youth empowerment and grassroots democracy. The party slogan Skiza Wakenya has resonated with many who feel unheard.
Photos circulating online show Gathogo standing beside Gachagua in Githurai as crowds chant her name. Supporters call her Mama and say she understands their struggles. With DCP promising open nominations the race for Ruiru is already shaping up to be intense.
Political observers say her experience and renewed energy could make the contest one of the most watched battles in Kiambu. As 2027 draws closer Ruiru voters are preparing for a fierce showdown that could redefine local politics.
