Renowned Kenyan writer and scholar Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o passed away on May 28, 2025, in Buford, Georgia, USA, at the age of 87. In line with his final wishes, Ngũgĩ’s body was cremated in the United States, as confirmed by his son, Mukoma wa Ngũgĩ. The family announced that there will be no formal burial for the literary giant.

Instead of a traditional burial, Ngũgĩ’s legacy will be honored through a series of commemorative events. The first is scheduled for June 7, 2025, at the Akazi Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. Further gatherings are planned at the University of Nairobi and the University of California, Irvine, later in November 2025.
