Kenyan actress Christine Wawira has sparked conversation online after sharing her experience with a bottle of alcohol she suspected was fake.
Wawira said she immediately noticed something unusual about the drink after purchasing it. According to the actress, the alcohol had a strong smell that reminded her of nail polish remover, raising concerns about whether it was safe for consumption.
Rather than ignoring the matter, Wawira returned to the shop where she had bought the bottle and confronted the attendants. She questioned them about the product and maintained that what she had been sold was not genuine alcohol.
Videos circulating online captured part of the confrontation, with Wawira firmly demanding answers from the shop attendants. At one point, phrases such as “that’s not real county” and “that’s fake alcohol” could be heard during the exchange.
Wawira remained determined to get her money back and asked the attendants to contact their manager over the matter. After the confrontation, the shop eventually refunded her money.
Her experience has since attracted attention on social media, with several Kenyans saying they have also encountered drinks they suspected were counterfeit or tampered with.
The discussion comes at a time when concerns over the safety of alcoholic drinks sold in different outlets continue to attract public attention. Some social media users also linked the conversation to other recent reports involving people who allegedly became seriously ill after consuming alcohol.
Other Kenyans used the comments section to suggest ways consumers could protect themselves. One person suggested that customers should consider breaking empty bottles after use to prevent dishonest traders from reusing them to package counterfeit drinks.
Wawira’s experience has therefore renewed calls for consumers to remain cautious when purchasing alcohol. Kenyans online have continued to urge people to pay attention to unusual smells, tastes, packaging and other signs that may indicate a product is not genuine.
For Wawira, what began as a simple purchase turned into an unexpected confrontation, but her decision to speak out has opened another conversation about the products consumers are being sold and the importance of raising concerns when something does not appear right.
