While speaking during Wafula Chebukati’s memorial service at his Kiminini home, former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha was surprised to discover a softer, romantic side of the late IEBC chairman. Known for his no-nonsense demeanor, Chebukati appeared in several old photos lovingly holding his wife, a sight that left Nakhumicha both amused and amazed.
Reflecting on these images, Nakhumicha admitted that she went home and confronted her husband, urging him to emulate Chebukati’s affectionate gestures. She humorously suggested that they should take more romantic photos together so that in the future, such moments could serve as cherished memories, just as Chebukati’s pictures now do.
Expressing her surprise further, Nakhumicha remarked that Bukusu men, a subtribe of the larger Luhya community, have not traditionally been known for their romantic nature. She found it astonishing that Bukusu men have seemingly embraced romance in recent years, a stark contrast to the past when such displays of affection were uncommon.
According to her, romance was never part of the “Bukusu library,” but times have changed, and Bukusu men are now adopting romantic tendencies from other communities. She noted that their level of affection has reached impressive new heights, making it clear that cultural norms are evolving.
