Judge

A report by the Daily Nation media group on 17th, December 2025, disclosed to the public what late Justice Ibrahim Mohammed, who sadly passed away on Wednesday evening, was forced to do, to save his job which was under threat after vetting of Judges and Magistrates during the reign of retired Chief Justice (CJ) Willy Mutunga.

As per the publication, after the Magistrates and Judges vetting Board officially came into existence in the year 2011, just a few months after Willy Mutunga’s appointment as the CJ, the legal officers were placed under the microscope, after a through vettting process was conducted by the vetting Board.

It so happened that during the vetting, Justice Ibrahim Mohammed had not cleared a backlog of over 200 cases and he found himself on the wrong side with the vetting Board, after it became evidently clear that he would to lose his job.

Some of the cases that Justice Mohammed had not delivered Judgements on had been pending for over five years in court, including in the previous station he was working in Eldoret, before he was transferred to the Supreme Court of Kenya in Nairobi.

In bid to survive the ouster, Justice Mohammed was forced to give an undertaking (a pledge which can be enforced by law) to CJ Willy Mutunga that he would clear all the 200 judgements he had left behind including in Eldoret.

As a result, he was allowed to continue with his duty at the corridors of law only for his name to capture the attention of the public due to the speed at which he delivered Judgements on the cases.
