Kenya Kwanza leaders have promised to look closely at the Finance Bill 2024 in Parliament. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa assured Kenyans that they would do the right thing. He criticized leaders who are encouraging people to oppose the Bill. Ichungwa spoke at Kugisingisi Secondary School during a fundraising event for 14 churches in Kuria West, Migori County.
Ichungwa said it is important to pass the Finance Bill so the government can collect taxes and provide services. He explained that if the Bill is rejected, there will be no money for services. “Don’t tell MPs to reject the Finance Bill. If it fails, it means the government will not collect taxes. We want people to get services, and this will only happen if we stop inciting Kenyans,” he said.
He assured that the Bill would be reviewed carefully to avoid hurting Kenyans and the economy. He said the right decision might not always be popular, but it is necessary. “I want to assure the people of Kenya that we have listened to you and we will do what is right. As responsible leaders, we will look into the Finance Bill 2024/2025,” Ichungwa added.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and other MPs, including Hillary Sigei, Maisori Kitayama, Sylvanus Osoro, Joash Nyamache, and Japheth Nyakundi, attended the event. They agreed with Ichungwa, urging Kenyans to support the Bill. MP Osoro said they are looking for ways to fund the Sh4 trillion budget without harming the public. He mentioned that they had agreed to reconsider taxes that would hurt Kenyans.
The Kenya Kwanza leaders accused the opposition of being hypocritical for rejecting the Bill. “Saying that the Finance Bill should not be passed is like saying that taxes should not be collected,” Cheruyiot said. The leaders emphasized the need for tax collection to run the government and assured the public that their input would be considered in the final report. Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko and Kuria West MP Mathias Robi were also at the event.
