The so-called ‘Bullfighter,’ Senator Boni Khalwale, abruptly broke with President William Ruto’s administration by forming a new political party and publicly opposing the established order of power.

His decision is the result of his public statement that his criticism of the regime will not be silenced by the Senate Chief Whip title bestowed upon him by the President.

This action sets the stage for a substantial political backlash within the ruling coalition in Western Kenya and suggests a significant and open rebellion by a key partner.

The two most important government figures in Western Kenya, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, are the main targets of Khalwale’s attack.

Using the striking analogy that they only fly over their constituencies in “choppers” without interacting with the grassroots, he accuses the pair of ignoring the voters who won them seats. This accusation purposefully aims to undermine their grassroots support by appealing to a popular narrative of elite alienation.

Declaring that President Ruto was the final dignitary his late wife prepared meals for before she passed away, Khalwale made a personal connection to the president in an emotionally charged moment.

He claimed that such a history should have stopped the President from trying to stifle his independent voice through a government appointment, using this moving detail to highlight a sense of felt personal betrayal. A political dispute is turned into a very personal one by this story.

Khalwale hopes to establish a “Third Force” that will directly challenge the UDA, ANC, and Ford-Kenya’s hegemony in the vote-rich Western area by introducing his new political vehicle.

His plan is to mobilize the populace by claiming that the existing administration has turned people into tools whose “only job is to deliver votes” so that the ruling class can take control.

The ruling coalition’s strategy to bring the region together under a single banner for the upcoming election cycle is made more difficult by the creation of this new party.

In the end, Senator Khalwale’s vehement public statement raises severe concerns about the viability of the Kenya Kwanza alliance in Western Kenya and foreshadows a bloody regional conflict before the 2027 elections.

His scathing criticism of Ruto, Mudavadi, and Wetangula is intended to strike a chord with a disenchanted populace, establishing himself as the sole legitimate representative of the average person in the area and laying the groundwork for a bloody internal struggle for political domination.
