Motorists using Thika Road were on Tuesday morning, October 7, caught in an unusual traffic snarl-up after a personal car overturned at the Roasters area, a section of the highway known for frequent accidents.

The incident, which occurred during the morning rush hour, caused heavy congestion as curious onlookers slowed down to view the wreckage. Police officers were immediately deployed to manage the situation and redirect traffic to alternative routes.

Images showed the overturned car lying across the middle of the busy highway, completely blocking one of the main lanes and forcing motorists to squeeze through the remaining space.

According to preliminary police reports, the car is suspected to have lost control before veering off its lane and plunging onto the main section of the highway below. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported at the time of the incident.

Witnesses at the scene noted that the vehicle appeared to have been moving at high speed before the driver lost control. The front passenger side of the car was completely mangled, pointing to the intensity of the impact.

The Roasters stretch has increasingly become a hotspot for road accidents, with several similar incidents reported in recent months. Just weeks ago, a lorry carrying murram rolled over near the GSU Headquarters, causing yet another major traffic jam.

In July, another motorist veered off the exit, jumped over the guard rails, and landed on the same section of the highway, sparking renewed concern over the area’s safety.

Following the recent surge in accidents, the Road Safety Association of Kenya has demanded that the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revoke all driving licenses issued over the past six years.

The association’s national chairperson, David Kiarie, alleged that many licenses were issued illegally to untrained drivers who bribed their way through the process without attending certified driving schools.

Kiarie urged authorities to conduct a thorough audit of NTSA’s licensing system, warning that continued negligence would only lead to more road tragedies and loss of innocent lives on Kenya’s highways.
